about

"The tempo has a menacing, bluesy vibe that powers Natalie’s anguished vocals." Americana UK

As songwriters, The Wanted largely adhere to folk music’s storytelling tradition, albeit with modern inspiration. Natalie points to her song “Stand Up” as a plea for justice. “It was actually inspired by Tara Westover's book Educated, the true story of a girl growing up in a fundamentalist family in the U.S. Midwest during the 1980s. My song is loosely based on how she ultimately gets out of that repressive situation, but I cast the main character as a young woman who fights back against an abusive partner to gain freedom and safety for herself and her children. I hope the song is a call to all women to fight back against abusers.”

It’s tough subject matter to be sure, but that’s been the essence of blues and folk since time immemorial.

lyrics

Stand Up (Natalie Rogers)

She sees the fire burning low, shadows on the floor.
Her apron’s hanging on the wall, she’s walking toward the door.
He grabs her arm as she walks by, and raises up his hand.
She turns prepared to push him back, cause she’s standing up to her man.

Oh oh oh oh

She was a child when they met, a child when they wed.
She always did what she was taught, compliant, easily led.
Oh do your work don’t answer back, a meek servant to the land,
Offer pain up to the lord, and never stand up to your man,

Oh oh oh oh

Courage grew with babies born, and bruises on her skin.
A blank face was all he saw, she kept her rage within.
Until once more he raised his hand to demonstrate his right.
A damn burst forth and she let go so she could fight and fight and fight and fight,

Oh no no, no no

So now the fire’s burning bright, no shadows on the floor.
Her babies tucked up safe and warm, a rifle by the door.
Oh power’s not a gift bestowed, or given upon demand.
We must take what we are owed, it’s time to Stand Up to your man

Stand up stand up, up! Oh oh oh oh
Stand up, stand up!! Oh oh oh oh
